First half decisive once again

The early bird catches the worm. The popular saying seems to define this season’s Barça pretty well. Against Bayern Munich, the Barça players once again wrapped up the game by halftime.

Minute 9: Messi. Minute 12: Eto'o. Minute 37: Messi. Minute 43: Henry. At half time 4-0 against Bayern Munich. It’s the kind of score line that might seem unusual but the fact is it has been repeated several times already this season in the Camp Nou. This Barça team likes to settle their matches in the first half.

The other victims

Five other teams have suffered from Barça’s stunning first half performances this campaign. Atlético Madrid (6-1) and Almería (5-0) conceded five goals in the first half while Valladolid (6-0), Olympique Lyon (5-2) and Malaga (6-0) conceded four.

Europe’s top scorer

The four goals against Bayern Munich, as well as bringing Barça closer to the semi-finals of the Champions League, have also put the Club back at the top of the ranking of goals scored. Before last night’s match, Barça and Bayern shared this honour with 24 goals apiece. Now Barça has 28, an average of more than 3 goals per match.

Messi top scorer

Two of Wednesday night’s goals were scored by Messi. The young Argentine has 32 goals to his name this season, 8 of them in the Champions League. This makes him the top scorer in the Champions League ahead of Klose (Bayern Munich) and Gerrard (Liverpool), who have seven.

Barça overrun Malaga (6-0)

Barça has gone on a goal rampage again, this time the victims were Malaga, who was already behind 4-0 at half time. Xavi, Messi, Henry, Eto’o (2) and Alves have been the scorers, and the league leaders hold on to their six-point advantage.

The match lasted 90 minutes but it was already over at half-time, when it was already 4-0, or even before then. The message given out by Barça even when it was still 0-0 was one of impending doom for Malaga, and it turned out to be a one-man-show as Barça proceeded to totally overrun a stunned Malaga.

It was also a festival of goals, with Xavi, Messi, Henry, Eto’o (2) and Alves showing their talent in a great all-round display by the team. With this result, FC Barcelona arrives at the short break in the league holding on to their six-point advantage over Real Madrid with 30 points still to play for.

Defence breaks down in the 18th minute

Barça began the game with all the possession, moves and pressure, with Malaga on the defence from the outset. Few teams survive Nou Camp playing that way. Iniesta and Henry looked threatening but Malaga’s defensive block wasn’t broken down till the 18th minute when Eto’o and Xavi swapped roles with Eto’o setting up the first Barça goal for Xavi, who had scored twice in La Rosaleda back in November.

Messi gets a scorcher

Being one down, Malaga should have turned up the pressure, but instead it was Barça who carried on going for goal. Messi got the second after a brilliant individual move down the right where he left Nacho and Hélder Rosario on the floor before beating Goitía with an amazing right-footed shot. Immediately after the celebrations, Touré, obviously in pain, was substituted by Keita.

Xavi lays on the goals

Barça had the taste for more goals in their mouths, just as they had against Atlético, Almería and Valladolid. Xavi now played the role of facilitator, first setting up Henry’s goal (where he beat Goitia in a one-on-one in the 31st minute), then setting up Eto’o’s first in the 42nd minute.
Xavi laid them on, the strikers scored and the fans were happy, and then a beautiful first half came to an end.

Show-time

Barça’s one-man-show resumed after half-time, and in the 50th minute an unmarked Alves headed home a pass from Iniesta. The fans went mad, but the show still wasn’t over. Six minutes later Henry set Eto’o up in the six-yard box, and the Cameroon player didn’t fail to deliver. Amazing! Later on in the half, an injured Iniesta was substituted by Gudjohnsen, and the youngster Bojan came on for Xavi. Then the show was over.

Virtually the whole of the Almeria-Barça game took place in the home team’s half. Barça’s possession at the end of the game stood at 71%, which is a pretty impressive figure especially away from home. The team also completed 640 passes as against 190 by their opponents.

Bojan’s second goal to make the scoreline 0-2 summarises both Sunday’s victory at Almeria and also how FCB play and win. Barça controlled the ball for 1 minute 49 seconds between Xavi getting it back in midfield and Bojan finding the back of the net.

A goal preceded by 37 passes is a work of art, a monument to quality football. Fans who went to the Juegos del Mediterráneo stadium were lucky enough to see it live. As Almeria parked the bus across the goal, Barça attacked in its usual way by firing the ball around at speed in end-to-end keep-ball.

Barça wins like this

In the 53rd minute with Barça ahead by 0-1, Xavi picked up the ball in midfield and passed to Messi. It was to be the first of 37 passes before Bojan stuck the ball past Diego Alves exactly 1 minute and 49 seconds later. Patience, playing it short and long, from wing to wing, with minimum individual touches, Guardiola’s men pulled Almeria this way and that until Dani Alves saw a gap down the right and began the final stage which ended in Bojan’s strike.

Doamne dupa minutul 18 nu-mi venea sa cred, ma intrebam in mintea mea la ce meci ma uit, apoi daca aia in galben is sigur romani... Nici astora de la redactia televiziunii nu prea cred ca le venea sa creada pentru ca afisau scorul din 2 in 2 minute... Prin minutul 37 am inceput sa cobor pe pamant... si sa inteleg ca da mai e Romania - Franta... si e 2-1. Dintr-un gol norocos si o centrare bunicica... Ribery ne-a mai taiat din aripi... ca prin repriza a doua sa coboram de tot pe pamant cand am vazut ce fel poate sa suteze "speranta fotbalului francez" Gourcuff... Asta e Lobontz e inger si demon....

S-a terminat 2-2... Bravo si nu prea....
